Placencia is a small village found in the Stann Creek District of Belize. Recently, tourism in the village has boomed, mainly due to the newly “discovered” tourism gems such as jungle highlands, beaches with amazing reefs, and the ruins of – believe or not – the ancient Mayans! In order to make the best of your trip to Placencia, here are six of the best activities you can do.

1. Diving with Whale Sharks

Placencia is home to the second largest barrier reef and has the ideal spot for divers and snorkelers. With more than 100 islands scattered just a few kilometers away from Placencia, travelers will have endless opportunities to explore the underwater habitat. Between the months of March and June, whale sharks can be spotted swimming lazily through the clear waters near the Placencia Penninsula. Whale sharks pose no threat to humans and swimming alongside them is truly a unique experience.

2. Exploring Mayan Ruins

Archeologists have confirmed that the ancient Mayans lived in Belize over one million years ago. Today, the remnants of their ancient civilization can be found scattered throughout the country. In Placencia, you can visit Nim Li Punit which consists of large step-pyramids surrounding three plazas. While touring the site, be sure to pack a pair of swimming trunks since there is a beautiful stream where you can swim directly into a cave.

3. Fly-Fishing, Drop Fishing, Trolling for Fish

One of the contributing factors behind Placencia’s boom in tourism is the various species of fish thriving in the nearby waters. Many fishing aficionados travel from around the world for an opportunity to a snag a potential dinner. You can travel by boat through the open coastal waters or drop by one of the various lagoons for fresh-water fish.

4. Animal-Spotting

There are numerous paved pathways that you can take through the thick jungles of Placencia. One of the most popular sites to hike through is the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary which is coincidentally the first-ever jaguar reserve. On any day of the year, you will most likely encounter boa constrictors, wild deer, and green iguanas from a safe distance. The luckiest hikers will come across a jaguar or other big cat species in the sanctuary. Although you can fare the sanctuary or other hiking trails alone, it’s best to employ a local guide to explain the cultural significance of nature and how most plants can be used as a homemade remedy.

5. Getting to Know the Garifuna and Creole Cultures

No visit to Placencia is complete without getting to a first-hand taste of the cultures of Garifuna and Creole. You try one of their several local delicacies, boogie down to the beat of a drum, or walk through a market to view their artwork. For a hands-on Creole experience, head on down to Monkey River Village where you can fish alongside locals or wolf down a delicious meal at one of the various family-owned restaurants. The Garifuna can be found in Seine Bight, a village found about three miles south of Maya Beach Village.

6. Venturing through Main Street

Palencia has been dubbed the smallest main street on Earth. Near the beaches, there is a car-less, motorcycle-less road just four feet across which several vendors situated on either side of the street. Take a few hours and stroll through the street, checking out the handicrafts, clothes, and snacks. Become absorbed in the buzzing of friendly arguments between buyer and vendor or chat with the locals over a cup of Joe.

Know About Football Equipment With Paul Ardaji. #PAULARDAJI#

Learn About Football With Paul Ardaji...

A Lot of Bulk

Paul Ardaji will give you some information about how to play football: What do you need to play football Game…

You're probably wondering why the players look so bulky under their jerseys.  As you probably suspect, it's because they wear lots of padding to protect their bodies as much as possible against the effect of the jarring collisions that occur on every single play.

All that equipment is mandatory, and with good reason: it is extremely necessary to prevent, or at the very least, reduce the risk of injury from playing what is generally acknowledged to be a sport with the one of - if not the - highest rates of injury of any your child could play.

Safety Equipment

So, what exactly are all those pieces of equipment meant to protect your young football warrior from injury? Here's the rub-down: ———————— Paul Ardaji

Helmet

Neck Collar/Neck Roll

Jockstrap and Cup

Mouth Guard

Thigh, Hip and Knee Pads

Shoulder Pads

Gloves

Helmet: As you would probably suspect, the helmet is the most important piece of equipment in football.  Face masks are mandatory, a visor is optional. Jaw pads can also be worn attached to the bottom of the helmet and provide some protection against concussions.

Contrary to popular belief, most of the football helmets currently in use do little if anything to protect brains from the forces that cause concussions. But technological advances in helmet design, while they may not make concussions in football a thing of the past, have made a significant reduction in the number of concussions a reality.  An innovative new helmet called the Xenith X1, which uses air-filled shock absorbers, is currently being field tested by high school and college teams across the country and offers the promise of increased protection against concussion.  It will be on the market in October 2008.

Parents should keep in mind the following when it comes to helmets:

An estimated half of all football helmets in use at the high school level have either been improperly reconditioned, have foam padding that has degraded over time, or fit poorly.  Only about one in five helmets is new.  Chances are that even fewer of the helmets in use at the lower age divisions have been properly reconditioned;
Helmets should be re-certified every year by an approved reconditioned, or discarded after three years of use;

Helmets need to fit properly, examined for damage before each use and worn with an approved mouth guard;

The chin strap, jaw pads and face masks should be adjusted to fit.

The helmet should be cleaned with water only and should not be painted or otherwise altered.

A helmet should not be used if the face mask is bent more than one-eight inch, rusting, or loose.

Helmets should never be used to butt, ram, or spear an opponent because of the risk of catastrophic head or spinal cord injury or even death.  Players need to be taught proper tackling and blocking techniques that do not involve leading with their helmet.

Helmets should not be shared with other players.

Neck collars/Neck Roll: Neck collars are often worn by linebackers and defensive lineman for whiplash protection.

Jockstrap and Cup: Athletic supporters and protective cups are mandatory.

Mouth Guard: Mouth guards or "mouth pieces" not only protect the wearer's teeth and jaw, but may provide some protection against head injuries such as concussions. The mouth piece must be worn at all times during play. The mouthpiece must be a highly visible color and is mandatory.

Thigh, Hip and Knee Pads: Thigh pads are the largest leg pads and protect the thighs from collisions. Knee and hip pads as well as elbow pads cushion blows to those specific areas.

Shoulder Pads: Shoulder pads come in two types, cantilevered and flat. Cantilevered pads are larger for players on the offensive and defensive line and linebackers who receive more direct collisions. Flat pads are used mainly by quarterbacks and receivers, as they are smaller and restrict movement less.

Gloves: Receiver gloves aid in catching the football, particularly during cold weather.

Lineman gloves have more padding and help protect of all parts of the hand.

Learn About the Football (Soccer) Rules by Paul Ardaji

Paul Ardaji is providing you some information about football (Soccer) rules.

Football (Soccer) is one of the oldest sports in the world and with that it’s also one of the most recognized. The pinnacle of the international game comes in the form the Football World Cup. There are also tournament such as the Euro Championships, Copa America and the African Cup of Nations. Domestically the strongest leagues come from England (English Premier League), Spain (La Liga), Italy (Serie A) and Germany (Bundesliga). In parts of the world the sport is also known as Soccer.

Object of the Game

The aim of football is to score more goals then your opponent in a 90 minute playing time frame. The match is split up into two halves of 45 minutes. After the first 45 minutes players will take a 15 minute rest period called half time. The second 45 minutes will resume and any time deemed fit to be added on by the referee (injury time) will be accordingly.

About the Players & Equipment by Paul Ardaji

Paul Ardaji

Each team consists of 11 players. These are made up of one goalkeeper and ten outfield players. The pitch dimensions vary from each ground but are roughly 120 yards long and 75 yards wide. On each pitch you will have a 6 yard box next to the goal mouth, an 18 yard box surrounding the 6 yard box and a centre circle. Each half of the pitch must be a mirror image of the other in terms of dimensions.

Essentially the equipment that is needed for a soccer match is pitch and a football. Additionally players can be found wearing studded football boots, shin pads and matching strips. The goalkeepers will additionally wear padded gloves as they are the only players allowed to handle the ball. Each team will have a designated captain.

Scoring

To score the ball must go into your opponent’s goal. The whole ball needs to be over the line for it to be a legitimate goal. A goal can be scored with any part of the body apart from the hand or arm up to the shoulder. The goal itself consists of a frame measuring 8 feet high and 8 yards wide.

Winning the Game

To win you have to score more goals than that of your opponents. If the scores are level after 90 minutes then the game will end as a draw apart from in cup games where the game can go to extra time and even a penalty shootout to decide the winner. Players must use their feet to kick the ball and are prohibited to use their hands apart from goalkeepers who can use any part of their body within the 18 yard box (of which more can be found out in the next section).

About Rules of Football (Soccer) By Paul Ardaji

Paul Ardaji

A match consists of two 45 minutes halves with a 15 minute rest period in between.

Each team can have a minimum of 11 players (including 1 goalkeeper who is the only player allowed to handle the ball within the 18 yard box) and a minimum of 7 players are needed to constitute a match.

The field must be made of either artificial or natural grass. The size of pitches is allowed to vary but must be within 100-130 yards long and 50-100 yards wide. The pitch must also be marked with a rectangular shape around the outside showing out of bounds, two six yard boxes, two 18 yard boxes and a centre circle. A spot for a penalty placed 12 yards out of both goals and centre circle must also be visible.

The ball must have a circumference of 58-61cm and be of a circular shape.

Each team can name up to 7 substitute players. Substitutions can be made at any time of the match with each team being able to make a maximum of 3 substitutions per side. In the event of all three substitutes being made and a player having to leave the field for injury the team will be forced to play without a replacement for that player.

Each game must include one referee and two assistant referee’s (linesmen). It’s the job of the referee to act as time keeper and make any decisions which need to be made such as fouls, free kicks, throw INS, penalties and added on time at the end of each half. The referee may consult the assistant referees at any time in the match regarding a decision. It’s the assistant referee’s job to spot offside’s in the match (see below), throw INS for either team or also assist the referee in all decision making processes where appropriate.

If the game needs to head to extra time as a result of both teams being level in a match then 30 minutes will be added in the form of two 15 minute halves after the allotted 90 minutes.

If teams are still level after extra time then a penalty shootout must take place.

The whole ball must cross the goal line for it to constitute as a goal.

For fouls committed a player could receive either a yellow or red card depending on the severity of the foul; this comes down to the referee’s discretion. The yellow is a warning and a red card is a dismissal of that player. Two yellow cards will equal one red. Once a player is sent off then they cannot be replaced.

If a ball goes out of play off an opponent in either of the side lines then it is given as a throw in. If it goes out of play off an attacking player on the base line then it is a goal kick. If it comes off a defending player it is a corner kick.

The Offside Rule in Football by Paul Ardaji

Paul Ardaji

Offside can be called when an attacking player is in front of the last defender when the pass is played through to them. The offside area is designed to discourage players from simply hanging around the opponent’s goal waiting for a pass. To be onside they must be placed behind the last defender when the ball is played to them. If the player is in front of that last defender then he is deemed to be offside and free kick to the defending team will be called.

A player cannot be caught offside in their own half. The goalkeeper does not count as a defender. If the ball is played backwards and the player is in front of the last defender then he is deemed to be not offside.
